[Bookplate for Lord Francis Gray by Daniel Lizars and William Home] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), charged with a lion rampant, with an engrailed bordure, argent (silver). The shield is supported by a lion rampant guardant on each site. Above the shield is a crown denoting baron status, and directly above the crown is a crest of an anchor upon a straight wreath. Immediately below the shield is another crest, a swan, also upon a straight wreath. Extending out from the bottom of the shield are two banners, with bookplate test within. The bookplate is bordered by an elaborate leaf design. 2. [Bookplate for John Darby] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), with a chevron, argent (silver), with the lower part a fillet. Upon the escutcheon are three sheaves of wheat (possibly corn, garbe), two over one . A military medal is at centre chief, with the word "NILE" immediately below. Within the chevron, an anchor each at dexter and sinister, with a naval crown at centre. Above the escutcheon is a crest of a sheaf of wheat (or possibly corn, garbe) and an anchor, upon a straight wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 3. [Bookplate for Ditton Park] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), divided per pale. The left armorial is charged with three fusils, gules (red). The right armorial has a chief, azure (blue), the charged with three mullets. The lower half is charged with a crowned heart, possibly a preperesentation of a Claddagh. 4. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot by Graham Johnston] This bookplate's design features, in black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged on the fess with three cinque foils within an indented bordure. Above the escutcheon is a tilting helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a dexter hand couped at the wrist, which holds a laurel wreath aloft. Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. The bookplate designer's initials and the date of creation are hidden among the mantling. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name. A smaller version of this bookplate may also be viewed at BP MUR SL P H475a. 5. This bookplate appears to be a smaller version of BP MUR SL P H475b, but the creator's initials are barely visible amongst the mantling. 6. [Bookplate for Saul Globus] This bookplate features an airplane circling around an abstract structure against a dark sky. 7. [Bookplate for Reginald Hibbert Tupper] The crest is a dog with a flower in its mouth. Below the crest is a banner with the motto. 8. [Bookplate for Thomas Nickleson Jeffery by C. W. Torbett] The armorial bookplate features a coat of arms. The escutcheon (shield) appears to be the impalement, or combining, of two distinct coats of arms into one shield. The dexter (right) shield is quartered: the repeated pattern features naiant (swimming) dolphins in an azure chevron between three leopard faces ; roses in a divided field of ermine (white with black tincture) and erminois (gold with black tincture) ; and a pheon (barbed arrow head) over an embattled field of sable and azure. Sinister (left) is a lion passant (lion depicted facing and walking to the left), which appears to be the shield of Jeffrey’s family through marriage, the Uniackes. Above the shield is a crest featuring a tree and a leopard with a horizontal anchor under its paw. Below the shield is a motto. 9. [Bookplate for Union des Commis-Marchands] Text is printed in a numbered list, surrounded by a line border resembling chain. 10. [Bookplate for British Association for the Advancement of Science] Red and black ink on white paper. Coat of arms at top. Quartered shield shows English rose, Scottish thistle, Irish clover and Canadian beaver. Text in a bordered circle around shield. Cursive text below. Contributors include British Association. 11. [Bookplate for Emily Ogden Wheeler] Printed in brown ink on white or cream paper the bookplate consists of a border of four thin branches bearing leaves and buds. Wrapped around the top and bottom branches are banners bearing the quotation 'DREAMS BOOKS ARE EACH A WORLD AND BOOKS / WE KNOW ARE A SUB-STANTIAL WORLD.' In the center of the border appears the name of the owner. 12. [Bookplate for Maurie Barrett] Printed in black ink on white paper, with a peel and stick feature. The image is a version of the crest of the Arms of Canada. It shows a crowned lion standing on a wreath, with mouth open and tongue extended. The lion holds aloft the maple leaf and looks out from his frame which is surrounded by more maple leaves in a double frame. The lion's position, with the dexter forepaw raised and head turned to face the viewer, is known as passant guardant. The lion's tail is flamboyant and resembles the mantling often found on heraldic bookplates. 13. [Bookplate for Thomas Troughton] Printed in black ink on white paper, in the upper left of the ex libris appears the crest of a lion erased issuing from a straight wreath. At the base of the lion's head is a veil sable with two pellet over one plate. To the right is the crest of a stag statant issuing from a straight wreath. Below the two crests appears a banner bearing the motto 'CARPE DIEM.' At the bottom of the ex libris appears the name of the owner, 'The Revd. Thomas Tronghton.'. 14. [Bookplate for Lesslie M. Sweetnam by F. F. H.] Printed in black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate shows a figure reading a book while sitting at a roll top desk with his / her back facing the viewer. The desk is flanked on either side by full bookcases and is topped by a reading lamp, additional books, and a small picture frame. Two framed objects hang on the wall above the desk. 15. [Bookplate for Oeuvre des Bons Livres de Montreal] Printed in black ink on cream paper, an intricate border evocative of a tabernacle and constructed of geometric repeating patterns topped with a cross surrounds the text. Above the text is a symbol featuring a cannon and two flags. 16. The image is a version of the crest of the Arms of Canada. It shows a crowned lion atop a larger crown, with mouth open and tongue extended. The lion stands firm with his rear right leg forward as if indicating an intent to pounce. This position, with all four paws on the ground and head turned to face the viewer, is known as statant guardant. The lion's tail is flamboyant and resembles the mantling often found on heraldic bookplates. 18. [Bookplate for Frederic Lumb Wanklyn] In brown ink on white paper, a flying duck within a darkened circle is at the centre of the bookplate. It appears to be affixed to a post, on top of which there is a sign that reads 'Ex Libris F.L. Wanklyn.' The post is standing in a marsh. 19. [Bookplate for Ferdinand I Czar of Bulgaria] In black ink, this complex bookplate contains an escutcheon divided quarterly ; the first and fourth quadrants contain a lion, salient and crowned (it is unclear what colour these quadrants would be due to the printing process) ; the second quadrant, argent (silver) contains two pallets, likely sable (black), and a sable chief charged with two crowns, argent, possibly signifying eastern or celestial crowns ; and the third quadrant, argent, contains two manche facing one another, with arms and hands emerging, together holding a crown. At the fess point is an inescutcheon, which bears the coat of arms of Saxony ; barry of ten pieces, or (gold) and sable, with a garter (vert), floral invection on sinister side. The escutcheon is crested by a royal crown framed by a circular halo. The escutcheon is supported by two lions, wearing royal crowns, each also framed by a circular halo. From around the waist of each lion descends a collar which meets at the nombril point below the escutcheon ; from this point hangs the Grand Cross Of The Order Of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius. At either side of the order is a banner containing the originator's designation. Above the crest and supporters are two sets of fleur-de-lis, two over one, signifying the House of Bourbon ; and an additional banner. 20. [Bookplate for Edmund Maskelyne] In black ink, this chippendale-style bookplate consists of an escutcheon, sable (black), charged with a fess, or (gold) and engrailed, and three escallopes, two over one. The escutcheon is crested by a wreath and a demi-lion, holding an escallope between its two paws.
